Last New york Fashion week 2009 About Donna Karan Autumn/Winter

About Donna Karan

"Everything I do is a matter of heart, body and soul," says Donna Karan, chief designer of the international company that bears her name. "For me, designing is an expression of who I am as a woman, with all the complications, feelings and emotions."

In fact, Karan credits her feminine instincts for the success of the company she founded in 1984 with her late husband Stephan Weiss, which went on to be come a publicly-traded enterprise in 1996, and then five years later, was acquired by its present owner, the French luxury conglomerate, LVMH , Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton. Says Karan, "That I’m a woman makes me want to nurture others, fulfill needs and solve problems. At the same time, the artist within me strives for beauty, both sensually and visually. So design is a constant challenge to balance comfort with luxe, the practical with the desirable."

How Karan meets that challenge can run from the simplicity of a bodysuit (where it all began) to the artisan glamour of a limited edition hand-painted devore dress. Whatever form the design takes, Karan will tell you it begins and ends with the body - its sensual expression, sense of security, and freedom of movement.

A modern system of dressing, Karan’s concept is based on seven easy pieces, where a handful of interchangeable items work together to create an entire wardrobe that goes from day to evening, week day to weekend, season to season. "I’m designing for an international man and woman. A creative person who never knows where a day is going to take them," says Karan. "That’s why New York is on the label. It sets the pace, the attitude."

Speaking in a multi-cultural language of fashion, Karan is inspired by the life and innate style of the artist. Quintessential hallmarks include black cashmere, leather, stretch and molded fabrics, often developed by Karan, as well as silhouettes that wrap and sculpt the body.

For Karan, it’s never been just about clothes; It’s about lifestyles . She sees the entire picture from head-to-toe , from function to aesthetic. Handbags and shoes are designed right alongside the clothes. "How do I dress the leg?" inspired Donna Karan Hosiery. "The right bra?" Donna Karan Intimates. "The perfect glasses?" Donna Karan Eyewear. The list goes on to include belts, accessories and, as Karan puts it, Everything you need to pull yourself together."

Karan’s quest for the perfect jeans, as well as her desire to dress her daughter Gabby, resulted in the 1989 birth of DKNY . Fast fashion with an urban mind-set, DKNY is what Karan calls "the pizza to Collection’s caviar." DKNY grew so popular and diverse that other brands and labels spun from it, including DKNY Jeans, DKNY Active, DKNY Underwear, DKNY JEANS Juniors, AND DKNY Kids. (Not surprisingly, Karan’s grandkids and friends’ kids had much to do with the latter). Like Collection, DKNY has an accessories and show collection to underscore its New York City street-smart look.

Karan saw that the many men in her life, starting with her husband, also needed a sophisticated system of dressing. Considering Karan’s father was a custom tailor, a menswear collection was inevitable, and it was founded in 1992. Since men cannot live by doubleface cashmere suits alone, DKNY Men emerged a year later in answer to his casual, sport side, which then beget its own dress shirt and tailored clothing collections.

Determined to seduce all the senses, Karan took on the world of beauty in 1992 under the business and creative leadership of her husband, who designed the bottles and jars for the signature fragrances and their ancillary products. The beauty division went on to introduce best-selling fragrances. Completing the lifestyle approach to design, in 2001 Karan introduced a Donna Karan Home collection "all about touch and feel," which includes everything from luxe bedding and candles to cashmere throws, and DKNY home, which accents INTERIORS with fashion-forward bedding and accessories.

Donna Karan International has an excess of one hundred company-owned and licensed free standing Donna Karan collection, DKNY, AND DKNY JEANS stores worldwide. The first flagships opened in London - DKNY in 1994, and Collection two years later. 1999 marked the opening of the uptown New York City DKNY flagship store, located at 60th Street and Madison Avenue, and two years later, came the downtown DKNY flagship on West Broadway in SoHo. Bringing it back to where it all began, in 2001 Karan opened the Donna Karan New York flagship store, the premiere Collection showcase, at 819 Madison Avenue. Designed as "a serene escape from the city’s chaos," a dramatic indoor/outdoor river rock garden runs through the townhouse’s ground floor.

For Karan, it literally and creatively began in New York. She was born into fashion on Long Island. Not only was her father Gabby Faske (who died when Karan was three ) a tailor, her mother Helen was a showroom model and fashion sales rep. Even Karan’s stepfather Harold Flaxman was in the fashion business. So it was only natural that Karan, while still in high school, designed her first collection and staged her first show.

Following her second year at Parson’s School of Design, Karan was hired by Anne Klein for a summer job . After three years as an associate designer, Karan was named successor following Klein’s death in 1974. Louis De ll’Olio, a Parson’s friend, joined her a year later. Together, they designed the Anne Klein Collection. In a foreshadow of DKNY, Karan created Anne Klein II in 1982, originating the concept of bridge and lifestyle dressing in fashion. After ten years of designing Anne Klein, Karan was ready to go out on her own with the support of Weiss and partner Takiyho, Inc. the owner of Anne Klein & Co. Fall 1985 saw the first Donna Karan New York Collection and the reaction from the press and retailers proved once again that Karan made fashion history.

Throughout her long career, Karan’s peers have acknowledged her achievements with numerous accolades. The Council of Fashion Designers of America has saluted her six times. In 2003, Karan was the first American designer to receive Fashion Group International’s "Superstar Award." A year later, Karan’s Alma Mater Parson’s gave her an honorary doctorate to commemorate her contribution to the school and fashion industry, and in 2007, Glamour magazine named Karan one of their Women of the Year.

Using her company’s visibility and resources for social causes is a heartfelt priority. A member of CFDA’s board of directors, Karan conceived and spearheaded its Seventh on Sale benefits to raise funds for AIDS awareness and education. Karan co-chairs the annual New York "Kids for Kids" events for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, as she has since its 1993 inception, as well as underwrites "Super Saturday," an annual designer flea market/barbeque founded with the late Liz Tilberis in 1998 to benefit the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. To facilitate her many on-going philanthropic involvements, in 1999, Karan and Weiss established the Karan Weiss Foundation.

Karan’s Urban Zen Initiative, founded in 2007, is the culmination of Karan's philanthropic efforts. explains Karan, "I have founded the Urban Zen Initiative to create a working structure for advancing wellness, preserving culture and empowering children. These are the causes that mean the world to me."

Styles of beauty

In our country few stylists have managed to complete their 25 plus years in the industry. Rizwana Khan is one such stylist who has been in the beauty business for the last 26 years. Recently, Rizwana Khan celebrated her salon - Zara's 26th anniversary in a style show at her Zamzama branch in Karachi. Here she talks to You! about her experiences and work...
"When I started my salon 'Zara's' in the '80s there were a few known beauticians like Mussart Misbah, Peng Qureishi, Rohana Iqbal and Daulat Rahimtoola. Mostly top salons of that time like Shaheen's, Depilex and Dolly's were located at Tariq Road and Bhadrabad. I really had to work hard to establish myself as a reputed beautician. I opened my first salon in North Nazimabad. Then I went to Baghdad (Iraq) for a few years where I got professional training in hair, make-up and skin. The years which I spent in Baghdad were a great leaning experience. I also got a chance to work in one of the top salons of Baghdad where I used to make brides. I was really impressed by the well groomed Iraqi women as they were very particular about how they look.
"I came back to Karachi in 1990 and re-opened my salon. Then I opened my second branch in Bhadrabad about 15 years ago. It was a challenging task as I arranged for the finances and place and everything all by myself but with the support of my family and friends I was able to manage it successfully. Last year, I opened a third branch of my salon at Zamzama."
Rizwana has participated in lots of fashion shows and has done numerous beauty shoots for magazines. But her recent style show, which was held at her Zamzama's salon, was her first solo show. "It was basically a hair and makeup show in which I tried to be innovative by giving gorgeous models different looks and styles like I did with party makeup, bridal makeup, evening makeup etc," explains Rizwana.
Well at the show one could spot top models like Iraj, Gia Ali, Rabab and Maha wearing Usman Ditto, Maheen Karim, Karma Pink and Jami Abidi's beautiful creations. Although it was a style show, mixing it with fashion sabotaged the whole concept. Poor audience, cramped in a small space, which was not at all fit for a show, could not relish the show as there was not enough place for them to stand or sit. Had there been a larger venue, guests would have enjoyed more.

Anyway, talking about latest trends in hair and makeup Rizwana says that these days waves are in and makeup is to be blended well. In streaking colours like light brown and chocolate brown are very popular among women. However, she suggests that 40 plus women should not go for light brown as it gives a dull effect. She advises young girls to keep long hair and recommends that middle-aged women should go for shoulder-length as it makes them look younger and fresh.
She believes in using quality stuff and always uses branded cosmetics like Mac, Maybeline and YSL. According to Rizwana taking care of one's skin is very important. She shares some beauty tips with our readers, "Wear minimum makeup in daytime as your skin needs to breathe too. Try wearing makeup in evenings. If you use foundation then make sure it is well-blended."

Asian glamour

Once again Pakistan got an opportunity in the Asian Fashion extravaganza, held recently in Dubai, proving that our designers have that certain oomph to stand equal to international designers.

The fashion stature of Pakistan keeps going up every year and it seems like there is no stopping the vast improvement in our ways of fashion. All designers, including the amateurs and recognised ones appear to be launching one clothing line after another, each one more outstanding than the last. With such extravagant variety available, it's no wonder that our fashion industry is attaining recognition on a world wide basis. First it was the most awaited fashion fiesta known as the Dubai fashion week and now, once again Pakistan received a chance to prove that designs from our fashion industry have that certain oomph to stand equal to international designs.
Recently, our designers attained the great opportunity to participate in a grand event in Dubai, known as the Asian Fashion extravaganza. The event left all the attendees mesmerised as Asian couture took centre stage, this time at the Westin Mina Seyahi. The lucky talented Pakistani designers who participated in the event included Umar Sayeed, Chinyre Couture by Bareeze, Lajwanti , Sonia Azhar, B n S , Rani Emaan and Goal. Also presenting his designs was Arnab Sen Gupta from our neighbouring country, Kolkata, India. The elite there attended the glitzy event and watched the gorgeous models as they walked elegantly down the runway in the latest cutting edge styles.
Asian Fashion Extravaganza, no doubt, added colour and new variety in the Fashion industry of Asia, particularly in India and Pakistan. Vision Event International and Savvy PR Events in connection with private TV channels and other organizations, were responsible for presenting this mega fashion event in Dubai. This up beat fashion event provided an opportunity to the top class Indian and Pakistani designers to show the power of their fashion internationally.
The show opened with Sonia Azhar and her lovely collection, followed by Chinyre, Lajwanti, GOAL, B N S, Arnabsen Gupta, Rani Emaan and finally the king of bridal fashion Umar Sayeed. The show ended with Mehreen Syed as a bride wearing stunning bridal wear from Umar. The elegant models strutting their stuff down the ramp were Iraj Manzoor, Nadia Hussain, Gia Ali, Mehreen Syed, Rubya Chaudary, Fiza, and Nooray Bhatti along with famous UAE models. .
The credit for the music and fashion choreography goes to Rezz Aly Shah, who managed to dazzle the audience with a variety of music, adding a specific flavour according to the genre of clothes being presented. All in all the show was a perfect blend of east and west and turned out to be a successful event.
Dubai has been a big hub for promoting the Pakistani and Indian joint ventures in numerous fields, especially in the fields of style and fashion. It is playing a vital role as a platform through where many designers from both the countries get a chance to present their skills. Way to go Dubai, but more astounding than that are the efforts of all our designers. Hats off to all those who spent days and nights working to get the Pakistani fashion industry to the place where it is right now.
